Last year our backyard was unusable due to the mosquitoes, and being in Richmond Virginia the 8 legged creatures are everywhere. Has anyone here used the permethrin concentrate from Amazon and a sprayer for DIY pest control? If so, what are your opinions or results?

Have used a propane 'skeeter trap, they work really well.

I looked into it, but was worried about how long it stays around and potential dosing to pets and kids (and pregnant ladies).
I opted for pyrethrum (the natural substance that the synthetic permethrin is based on). It is less effective and is water soluble, so it gets washed off of whatever it is sprayed on easily.
I live in Houston, where the mosquitoes will carry off your children if you are not careful and it seems to make a big difference in their activity.

Bad stuff. Great at killing skeeters...and everything else good or bad. Bees, butterflies, etc. And still not all that effective at getting the skeeters...my buddy the entomologist says it's a waste of time and money. You'd be better served by getting rid of standing water and wearing DEET-based repellents.

When we lived in Hawaii we had a machine that gave off Co2 and sucked them in. We had a creek near us so there was no hope of getting rid of them. Find the standing water if you can!

My wife and I can't get rid of the standing water either due to the creek and other stuff but we're using CO2 traps. Just a little sugar water with some active yeast and a big bottle that's easy to get into but hard to get out of and it's pretty effective. Also we never kill any outdoor spiders. They help to keep skeeters in check.
